You can create and name a new layer for each conceptual grouping and then assign common properties to each layer.

When creating a layer, you must assign it a type in addition to the name. The layer type allows the program to correctly interpret the objects present in the layer.

NotaNote:

You can create an unlimited number of layers in a drawing and an unlimited number of objects in each layer.

To create a layer

  1. Open the Layer Setup dialog box in one of the following ways:

    • If the layer and view bar is displayed, click the button on the bar.

    • Choose the Layer and Views command in the Settings menu.

  2. Click the Add layer button. The New layer window opens.

  3. Enter the layer title and select the layer type according to the document type:

    • Drawings and schematics can only include Drawing layers.

    • PCBs can include any type of layer except Library layers.

    • Symbol libraries must necessarily contain a Library layer and at least one Drawing layer.

    • Footprint libraries must necessarily contain a Library type layer.

  4. Set the layer properties.
